A New Approach to Correct for the Phase Error Due to Temperature Changes in Fiber Optic Gyroscopes

Abstract

The problems associated with temperature related errors in fiber optic gyroscopes continues to be a hindrance to practical development. We describe here a technique that is very straightforward and can correct for a measured phase difference due to temperature changes. The response of the gyroscope to temperature change is determined experimentally by measuring the temperature inside the gyro package and the induced phase difference; this response can then later be subtracted from the total measured phase based on the measured temperature, yielding the actual phase difference due to rotation. Only a few carefully placed temperature sensors are required. The feasibility of the technique is demonstrated by our experiment.
