Abstract
Various interferometric fiber optic sensing schemes have been used to measure quantities such as temperature, pressure, strain, displacement, rotation, magnetic and electric fields, and current. All of them require two interacting beams in the interferometer with identical polarization for efficient operation. However, single mode fibers (SMF) do not maintain polarization for more than a few meters, because of the polarization-coupling perturbations that are randomly distributed along the fiber. Therefore, single mode polarization preserving fibers (SMPPF) are being used in most of these applications. * We propose a novel fiber sensing scheme using a tandem combination of a mutimode fiber (MMF) and a self-pumped phase conjugate mirror (SPCM). The SPCM is used to correct for mode mixing and depolarization which occurs in the MMF.
