Abstract

Pressure measurement by electrically non-conductive means is highly desirable in many applications, where electrical leakage or discharge, in the presence of volatile liquids or gases, may be a serious hazard. Medical applications are numerous , especially where miniature catheters are required to measure body fluid pressure in a specific organ or blood vessel. Electrical and semicondutor sensors require special insulation and protection which make the product bulky and difficult to manufacture. In this approach, a combination of technologies are used to produce an optical pressure transducer that is small in size and electrically safe: The piezoelectric quartz crystal is attached to the end of an optical fiber bundle. These fibers both transmit power to maintain oscillation of the crystal and to optically interrogate the crystal frequency. The optoelectronics are used to supply power to the sensor and process the received signals. Some very encouraging data have been collected.
