Abstract
Surface-plasmon polaritons in metal films may be used to construct optical fibre devices such as polarisers, polarisation selective couplers and also offer possibilities for improving the efficiency of certain sensor and non-linear devices due to the enhanced surface fields associated with the surface plasmon. 1,2 We report here theoretical and experimental studies of surface plasmon resonances excited in thin metal films deposited on optical fibres which have been polished to reduce their cladding thickness to a few microns (or less).
