Abstract

It has "been usual, when launching light into a circular cladded glass fibre and recovering the signal at the output from the fibre, to rely on direct coupling through the cleaved or polished ends of the fibre. Such a coupling arrangement has drawbacks when trying to connect an optical thin film or rectangular guide to a circular fibre, because the apertures of the two guiding systems are not matched. However, some method have recently been published 1,2 for suitably directing the radiation from the cut end of a fibre into a thin-film guide.
