Abstract

After brief calculations summarizing the maximum length between repeaters imposed by the physics of the problem, namely dispersion and photon loss, we turn to those limitations imposed by reliability: fiber breakage and repeater failure probabilities. A fiber breakage probability is derived by extrapolating recent experimental results from a Corning study.(1)
