Material Effects on Minimizing False Broadening

Abstract

The information carrying capacity of a multimode waveguide is limited by the intermodal dispersion caused by delay differences among the modes, and by the dispersion within each mode due to material and waveguide effects. For the typical homogeneous core waveguide, the dominant contribution comes from the intermodal dispersion. It has been shown in many previous works that, if the radial refractive index decreases as approximately the square of the distance from the axis, the intermodal dispersion can be reduced by as much as several orders of magnitude. Previous studies, however, have not included the effect which the difference in wavelength dependence of core and cladding refractive indices has on the propagation. In the present work it is found that this effect can alter by as much as 10-20% the profile which minimizes pulse broadening.
