Abstract

There is a growing interest in using optical waveguides in communications systems, in order to take advantage of their low loss, high bandwidth, and immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMT), In many applications it may be convenient to maintain the system configuration used with coaxial cable, and simply replace the electrical cable with optical cable. However, it can be advantageous to utilize the specifically optical nature of the signals propagating in optical waveguides, especially in situations involving large numbers of terminals. Though this my necessitate changing system configuration, it may pay consequent dividends in terms of system performance, reliability and survivability.
