Self-Steepening without Self-Phase Modulation

Abstract

A first optical manifestation of the Chen-Lee-Liu-type derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation results in self-steepening of ultrashort pulses and shock formation without simultaneous self-phase modulation and spectral broadening. Experiments verify theory.
