Abstract

This article briefly describes the first attempts to make liquid and solid standard flats. The plane surface of 100-mm diameter polished on a cylindrical block of CER-VIT does not show any difference greater than λ/270 with respect to a perfect plane over a circle of 70-mm diameter. After one year of use no deformation has been observed.
