Abstract

A high-resolution multipass grating spectrometer which utilizes a cryogenic post disperser to achieve diffraction-limited resolution from 2 to 30 μm is described. The cryogenic post disperser is an Ebert spectrometer of moderate resolution (Δν ≈ 1.0 cm−1) which is cooled to 100 K. This spectrometer follows a high-resolution (Δν ≈ 0.01 cm−1) multipass Littrow spectrometer in order to reduce the background photon flux at the detector by as much as 5 orders of magnitude. This reduction in the background flux is shown to improve SNRs by factors of 12–90. Measurements of CO spectra at 2.45 μm and methane at 7.6 μm are presented which demonstrate the capabilities of the instrument.
