Abstract

The parameters necessary for equidistant equal-time optimum operation of a Fabry-Perot spectrometer with a spherical etalon have been determined. For least uncertainty determinations of winds (temperatures) the etalon normalized width a+ is 0.072 (0.035); the normalized source width dg+ is 0.16 (0.11), and the normalized etalon aperture f+ is 0.14 (0.065). The corresponding reflectivity and finesse are 0.80 (0.89) and 14.0 (28.6), respectively. From these results, a gain factor for a spherical etalon spectrometer, relative to a plane etalon spectrometer, has been found to be G ≃ 4.75ds2D−2, where ds is the gap of the spherical etalon, and D is the diameter of the plane etalon. Thus a spherical etalon spectrometer with a gap ≥6.87 cm is a more powerful spectrometer than a plane etalon device with a 15-cm diam aperture.
