Abstract

Bending-induced retardation characteristics of a birefrigent optical fiber and its application to the temperature- or strain(bending)-insensitive fiber-optic sensing of the polarization mode interference type are described. Bending the birefringent fiber in the respective directions of the principal axes yields an opposite change in the retardation. Based on the bending characteristics, the temperature- or the strain-insensitive sensing can be achieved by using a pair of the sensing fibers arranged orthogonally in relation to the principal axis.
