Abstract

A novel method for coupling single-mode fibers to planar optical circuits with small waveguide dimensions is proposed. The method eliminates the need to apply microoptics or to adapt the waveguide dimensions within the planar circuit to the fiber dimensions. Alignment tolerances are comparable to those of fiber–fiber coupling. The low loss potential of the method is experimentally demonstrated for Al2O3 waveguides on silicon substrates.
