Shown are retrieved aerosol profiles from the NASA Langley High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) acquired 7 March 2006 on a 150 km flight leg over the Mexico City region: (a) backscatter, (b) extinction, (c) extinction-to-backscatter ratio, (d,e) depolarization ratio at 532 and 1064 nm, respectively, and (f) 1064-to-532 nm backscatter wavelength dependence. The HSRL provides direct measurement of aerosol extinction, which is important for estimating the radiative impact of the aerosols. Data products (c)-(f) are intensive observables (i.e., depend only on aerosol type) and indicate that the aerosol type varied significantly across the region covered by this flight leg.
