Abstract

The region 9657–5450A was observed with the type of source described by Meggers and Westfall, Hg-198 with argon as carrier gas excited by high-frequency oscillation. Fifty argon lines were compared with 5460·7532A of Hg-198. Nineteen of these were well observed both by ourselves (AOW) and by Meggers and Humphreys (MH). The mean difference (AOW)−(MH) is +0.0003A, the median difference is ±0.0003A. In the course of observing the spectrum of Hg-198 and in comparing the spectra of the other isotopes of mercury with that of Hg-198 the wavelengths of one hundred and twenty-five argon lines in the region 7200–3300A were compared with 5460·7532A on two or more plates. Seventeen lines well observed both by ourselves and by Humphreys (Hu) show (AOW)−(Hu) = ±0.0000A±0.0003A. Of the twenty-five lines in this region in common with Meggers and Humphreys, four are discordant; for the other twenty-one (AOW)−(MH) = +0.0012A±0.0003A. Meggers and Humphreys recommend the argon I spectrum as a source of standards; our results lend support to this recommendation. Wave numbers were deduced by means of Edlén’s refraction table. One hundred and five levels were determined and compared with those published by Charlotte Moore.
