Abstract

The stress-birefringence constants of synthetic periclase have been measured by the photometric-integration technique. The measured results for the difference constants are q1111-q1122 = −1.25×10−13 cm2 dyne−1 and 2q1212 = −0.66×10−13 cm2 dyne−1. The absolute constants were determined by the prism deviation method: the values are q1111 = −0.9×10−13 cm2 dyne−1 and q1122 = 0.3×10−13 cm2 dyne−1. The dispersion of the difference constants throughout the visible spectrum is about 2%, in opposite directions. No hysteresis effect was observed for pressures up to 8000 psi. The results are discussed briefly with reference to bond structure.
