Abstract

A numerical method of interpolation and a program for a Bendix G15D digital computer for the calibration of prism spectrometers is described. The method and program are of general applicability to any prism in any wavelength region for which there are a sufficient number of calibration points to yield the desired precision. The method is applied to a fused-quartz Perkin-Elmer model 99 double-pass spectrometer. A list of absorption peaks and emission lines, in the wavelength range 2300–26 000 A, is given. The precision of the calibration is as good as the resolution and the reproducibility of the drum setting which are about equal for this instrument and this prism in this wavelength range. A theoretical foundation for the McKinney and Friedel relationship is given and its limitations are discussed.
