Abstract

Absolute photoionization and absorption coefficients of N2O gas have been measured in the 600 to 1000 Å region using a one-meter Seya–Namioka type scanning vacuum-ultraviolet monochromator. The Hopfield helium continuum was used as a background source with photoelectric detection of the dispersed light. A number of peaks were observed in both the absorption and photoionization spectra at wavelengths that agreed well with those of a high-resolution photographic spectrum. The total continuum underlying the band structure has been estimated, as well as that fraction due to ionization and to dissociation. Fluorescence was observed when the wavelength of the incident uv was shorter than 960 Å. A region of weak emission with a broad maximum at about 860 Å was followed by a strong fluorescent edge at 756 Å. Fine structure superimposed on the weak emission was attributed to predissociation. Preionization was observed in Rydberg states and for the first time also in the dissociation continuum. Differences in the interaction of the ionization continuum with states and continua are discussed.
