Abstract

An atomic-beam light source for the vacuum-ultraviolet region of the spectrum is described. The light source can be used with any permanent gas for the emission of spectra under conditions of low atom density and windowless light paths. These conditions are necessary for the emission of the resonance lines of the rare gases with little self-absorption. Operating characteristics are presented for beams of air molecules and argon atoms.
