Abstract

Because most neurons in the visual cortex are selectively sensitive to contour orientation, physiological and psychophysical investigations are often concerned with stimulus orientation. The increasing use of cathode-ray-tube visual displays makes facility for oscilloscope pattern rotation valuable. Underlying concepts of the procedures to obtain rotatable patterns are described. These include techniques to produce sine and cosine fractional amplitudes of sweep waveforms, linear-mixer designs, and waveform-inverter methods. Advantages and disadvantages of essential elements are considered and details of a functional system are given.
