Abstract

The propagation of a pulse signal through a waveguide subjected to a periodic perturbation over a finite length is analyzed. Expressions for the pulse velocity and pulse-velocity dispersion are obtained for carrier frequencies well away from the band edges, both inside and outside the reflection band. It is shown that a periodically perturbed slab guide can be designed so that the combined effect of the waveguide and material dispersions creates a zero of the velocity (or second-order) dispersion at any chosen wavelength. The third-order dispersion of such a guide made of doped silica and with a perturbation amplitude Δ ∼ 10−5 is of the order of 2 psec/km for a signal centered at a wavelength of 1.55 μm and with a spectral width of 1 nm.
