Abstract

We report new high-resolution photoabsorption measurements of the principal and the intercombination series in neutral mercury by use of a 3-m vacuum spectrograph equipped with a 6000-line/mm holographic grating and synchrotron radiation as the background source of the continuum. The perturbations observed in these Rydberg series are parameterized by a three-channel quantum-defect theory. An improved value of the first ionization potential is derived as 84 184.15±0.07 cm-1.
