Abstract

Experimental evidence for different pump-power dependences of the thermal grating and the electronic contributions to a polarization spectroscopy signal is presented. This behavior, in the case of a thermal-grating signal, is interpreted as a propagation effect of the light waves along a longitudinal phase grating. In the case of the electronic signal, however, it is due to the local nonlinear interaction between the field and matter. The different pump-power dependences of the thermal and the electronic signals are used for their identification.
