Abstract

For an optical wave propagating within a nonlinear liquid in which an anisotropy is induced by an external dc electric field, the influence of linear absorption on the state of polarization was studied. The distribution of the intensities of the optical field components and their phase shifts were determined by numerical methods. It was found that even a relatively weak absorption (~10−2 cm−1) drastically changes the features of a light-polarization ellipse. The absorption reduces the effect of light self-action, whereas it has no influence on the effects due to birefringence. As a consequence, the light-polarization ellipse changes its orientation in a way that does not occur in systems considered previously. For arbitrary initial conditions the rotary movement of the ellipse develops into an oscillatory one. The role of dichroism is immaterial in the systems considered.
